I put the Shark Stratos through its paces on various surfaces, including hardwood, tile, vinyl, and both low and high-pile carpets. To challenge it, I scattered a mix of larger debris like dry rice and oatmeal, fine particles like sugar and baking soda, and even long strands of synthetic hair used in our Beauty Lab’s product tests. No matter the surface or the type of debris, the Stratos handled it all with ease. Its dual-brush roll system—a soft front roller for hard floors and a powerful rear brush for carpets—made quick work of cleaning, even along wall edges.

Just as advertised, long strands of hair were sucked straight into the dust cup without wrapping around the brush roll. What really stood out, though, was how effectively it tackled hard floors, reached deep into the grout lines of our ceramic tile test surface, and lifted embedded pet hair from the carpet.

Effective Filtration

With its fully sealed system and built-in HEPA filter, this vacuum is a great option for pet owners, allergy sufferers, or anyone aiming to trap dust inside the machine rather than releasing it back into the air. The HEPA filter sits behind the front grill, while the pre-motor filters can be found beneath the dust container. All filters are simple to remove and reinstall. To keep them performing well, a rinse with cold water now and then is all that’s needed, and they typically only need replacing every 2.5 to 3 years, making this vacuum cost-effective to maintain in the long run.

Highly Versatile

Upright vacuums typically excel at deep-cleaning carpets, and those equipped with hoses and attachments can also handle above-floor tasks, like cleaning upholstery, stairs, and drapes, similar to canister vacuums. The Shark Stratos takes it a step further with its detachable canister design. Removing the canister allows for easy access to high spots, tight corners, underneath furniture, and other hard-to-reach areas where standard uprights often fall short.

The wand detaches effortlessly and, paired with the flexible hose, offers over 8 feet of extended reach—making the Stratos highly flexible. While the model I tested came with just two attachments (a crevice tool and an upholstery tool), Shark offers a wide range of optional accessories. These include a motorized pet hair brush (standard with the upgraded AZ3002 model) and an under-appliance duster, further enhancing the vacuum’s functionality.

User-Friendly Design

Even the most powerful vacuum won’t get used often if it’s a hassle to operate. That’s why I appreciated the thoughtful design of this model. The large handle on top of the canister made it easy to carry, and the clearly marked, generously sized buttons and levers made removing the canister, extension wand, and dust cup simple. All the main controls—including power and floor-type selection—are conveniently located within easy reach. The spacious dust cup empties from the bottom but also opens at the top, making it quick and easy to clean thoroughly.

What could be better

The Fragrance Capsule Falls Short

While the scent capsule is simple to install, remove, and adjust, I barely detected any noticeable fragrance during use—even on the highest setting. It’s a thoughtful touch, and you might catch a subtle scent occasionally, but it’s not a standout feature worth basing your purchase on. Fortunately, this vacuum shines in many other, far more important areas.

It’s a bit bulky and tips easily.

On the one hand, I really appreciate the Shark’s large dust cup. On the other hand, it does contribute to the vacuum’s bulk, which can make it a bit tricky to maneuver, especially when the canister is attached and when reaching under furniture. That said, I believe the benefits it offers make this a minor trade-off.

I also noticed that the vacuum tends to tip over when I stretched the hose to its full length, either forward or to the sides, simulating longer-distance cleaning. Thankfully, when the vacuum is in the upright position and the hose and wands are being used, the brush rolls stop spinning, so there’s no safety concern

How I tested it

I began my evaluation of this vacuum by focusing on its ease of assembly, operation, and maneuverability. I took note of any parts that were challenging to attach or remove, and whether any buttons or levers were difficult to press or adjust. I also detached and reattached the canister, extension wand, and dust cup multiple times to assess their functionality. To test maneuverability, I pushed and pulled the vacuum across different floor types, steering it around obstacles and corners.

For cleaning performance, I used a variety of large and fine debris on both bare floors and carpets to evaluate how well it picked up the mess. I observed how much soil was collected, how many passes it took, and whether the vacuum pushed debris around (also known as “snowplowing”) rather than picking it up. I spread long and short hair across both carpeted and hard floors to simulate human and pet hair. Lastly, I tested the vacuum’s stability by stretching the hose in different directions to see how prone it was to tipping.

The bottom line: Is the Shark Stratos upright vacuum cleaner worth it?

In short: absolutely! While $400 might sound like a steep price for a vacuum, the Shark Stratos offers exceptional value. It’s well-built, user-friendly, and delivers excellent cleaning performance. Unlike many other vacuums, it avoids common issues like flimsy plastic components, tangled brush rolls, difficult-to-empty dust cups, and ineffective filtration. The added versatility of the lift-off canister essentially makes this vacuum like two machines in one. Shark is known for offering solid performance and thoughtful features at a reasonable price, and this model is no exception.
